Naturopathic
Medicine is the accomplishment of nurturing our bodies to the fullest
potential. It is about being consciously aware of the bodys desires and
needs. It is the art of mindfulness and consciousness. By instilling
Naturopathic Principals into everyday living, the goal of optimal health
becomes a reality.
The
Naturopathic Principals include: 1. Primum non nocere- First do no
harm 2. Vis medicatrix naturae- the Healing power of nature 3. Tolle
causam- Discover and treat the cause 4. Tolle totum- Treat the whole
person 5. Docere- the Physician as teacher
These
principals are very important to Naturopathy, they incorporate the totality of
health as one. Without one, there is no whole. Each principal serves as a key
to the door of true vitality. If one is missing, then the door cannot be
completely opened. This philosophy serves to show how Naturopathy is different
from the medicine that Conventional Physicians are trained. In general, they
are trained to recognize disease patterns and taught to silence the symptomatic
response of the body. However, Naturopathic Physicians are trained to recognize
disease patterns and treat the cause of the disease in its entirety using a
multitude of modalities including: Acupuncture, Botanical Medicine, Physical
Medicine, Minor Surgery, Pharmacology, and others. By doing so, Naturopathic
Medial Doctors attempt to cure the disease state and provide a more
prophylactic approach to medicine. By educating patients about the body and how
to properly take care of it, Naturopaths strive to prevent any form of
imbalance from occurring.
Conventional
Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine do share one major similarity and that is to
heal. It is the techniques and principals that differ from one
another.
It is commonly
asked, So when do I go to an NMD? The answer to this is quite
easy
anytime. A Naturopath serves as a Friend, a Counselor, a Physician, a
Teacher and much more. Ideally, it would be best to begin seeing a Naturopath
prior to becoming sick. This is so the Naturopathic Doctor can assess the
optimal health status of the body during its balanced state.
By going to an
NMD, it will be immediately obvious whether or not it is right for the patient.
Naturopaths sole purpose is to restore health to its optimal capacity. The
patient should expect to be listened to and questioned in detail about every
mental, emotional, physical, psychological and possibly even spiritual aspect
of the individuals life. It is the entirety of the whole person that
makes up the oneness of the body, so no detail is left unquestioned.
Optimal health and Vitality are a two-way relationship, giving to the body is
unconditional receiving. Nowadays we take more time to work, listen, feel and
do for others than ourselves. If we do care for ourselves, then who will? We
are our only hope. Most of all, it is important to remember this on a daily
basis: Our bodys are the homes to our souls. If we cant build a
healthy and comfortable environment for our souls to live, then how can it
strive?
